MCUG or 'micturation cystourethrogram' is another term used to describe the test 'voiding cystourethrogram'. The test involves visualizing the flow of contrast enhanced urine at the time of voiding (passing of urine) through radiological means and identifying any abnormalities in the flow or the structures related to voiding.

The test is indicated in a person who is having recurrent urinary tract infections, suspected of having obstructions to the urine flow (e.g. posterior urethral valve, stones...etc.), trauma to the bladder or when having incontinence.

The procedure:
The procedure requires the patient to lay down on a table and for small children mild sedation might be necessary. The process will involve introducing a contrast enhancing dye (radio opaque dye) into the bladder. This will be done using a catheter or a small feeding tube introduced through the urethral opening via the urethral tube. Once the tube is in place, the contrast medium will be introduced into the bladder using a bottle held above. The radiologist will visualize the filling through fluoroscopy and take films at that moment.
Following introduction of the contrast medium, the patient is asked to void or will wait till the child pass urine on the table into a bed pan. At the time of passing the urine, the radiologist will again take several films to cover the event.

Analysis:
The films taken at the time of introduction of the contrast medium as well as at the time of voiding will be analysed by the radiologist and could give a conclusion regarding the size, shape, capacity as well as the state of the urethra. The most important finding would be the presence or absence of reflux, which means urine is passing back towards the kidneys at times of higher pressures in the bladder. The resulting reflux can damage the kidney and affect its function.

Side effects:
Following the test, many people would not feel any discomfort but the small children might be little irritable due to the experience at the hospital. In rare instances, a person can develop an allergic reaction to the contrast medium
